Top 3 Job Search Steps for AV Candidates

Candidates: Why the Right Steps Lead to the Right Job

In the AV Industry, a skillset isn’t given. It’s learned, exercised, and improved upon over time. In many ways, it’s a step by step process. Becoming a craftsman at whatever position you hold doesn’t require you to simply sharpen and use your tools on a regular basis. It requires you to know the good tools from the poor ones. The right steps from the wrong steps. Why start a task without the proper tools or steps to get the job done right? The truth is that the job search is not any different from the job itself. Knowing what is needed before beginning your search can determine the entire outlook and results of your search. Are you ready to start looking? Let’s find out.

  • Slow Down & Gather Yourself – The job search is often rushed. However, a start and stop mentality can only get you so far. When beginning your search, try taking a step back so you can see the bigger picture of your career. Begin by accomplishing a few personal, physical and mental goals. These goals will give way to some valuable insights and help you formulate what your career goals actually are. It may seem counterintuitive to take time off from searching, but if you give yourself a break you will search stronger.
  • Self Audit – Self evaluation is difficult. Luckily, Step 1 makes it easier. Once you’ve slowed down and gathered yourself you now have insights into who you are and what you really want. This is where the self audit comes into play. Take inventory of your skills and past jobs. Who can you rely on for feedback? When did you perform your best? When did you perform at your lowest? What new skills can you learn? After answering these questions, begin your self audit by creating a career map. Map out a timeline on a piece of paper of where you want to be in 5 years, 10 years, and 25 years. This will allow you to see the bigger picture of your career. While creating this career map, add notes on what you could improve upon at each interval. The self audit will naturally dovetail into resume building and once you feel comfortable with your insights, it’s time to start the search.
  • Location Location Location – For many, the job search is almost entirely dependent upon location. Whether it’s moving away or staying put, the simple idea of where your next job will be is often the first thing that comes to mind. Steps 1 and 2 will have led you to new insights about yourself and an understanding of the broader picture of your career. Did location play a big role in your well being at your previous job? Does location pop up on your career map? If you said yes to either of those questions, then knowing where you want to go is a vital component of a more fulfilling search. We know how difficult it is to seek out location specific jobs. That’s why we developed the tools to make it easier. The AV Industry is full of integrators looking to fulfill positions.
