The 72 Hour Workweek Is Here – But So are We!

It is overwhelmingly easy for the owners of small businesses to get caught up in endless daily tasks and interactions. Whether you’re drowning in paperwork, or really into your game of solitaire, it’s important to move past the day to day operations, and commit more time to consider the overarching aspects of the company.

According to a Harvard Business Review survey, the average American professional in a leadership role works on average a 72-hour workweek. 57% work six days a week, and 20% work seven. Despite this enormous amount of time, many small business owners find themselves wondering why they don’t have time to do things they know they need to do for their company. 

The first thing we tell them is to lay off the solitaire, and the second recommendation is to practice delegation. There are plenty of processes that owners often feel the need to control for themselves, that they can easily delegate to other agencies or employees.

Most business owners take their recruitment process very seriously. Talent recruitment is widely agreed upon as a crucial part of owning a small business. But unfortunately, they often don’t have the experience necessary to do it efficiently. According to the Harvard Busines Review, “Businesses have never done as much hiring as they do today. They’ve never spent as much money doing it. And they’ve never done a worse job of it.” 

Why is this? Well, the economy is booming, and unemployment is at an all-time low. As a result, most employees who took a new job in the last year were ‘tracked down’ by a company or recruiting agency. They were not actively looking for a job at the time. This massively increases candidate conversion costs, especially if those hiring don’t have the expertise or network to be effective. And if you don’t want to spend the time, go pick someone random up at the local home improvement store. Either way, you’re hurting your company.

As a small business owner, it’s time to decide, what level of control are you willing to give to the experts, so that you can focus on what you are best at? The truth is, you didn’t get into this industry to sit through interviews and review dozens of resumes. 

If you’re working 72 hours a week, that leaves seven and a half hours of sleep and only three hours a day for everything else. Only three hours for family time, house chores, meals, and yes, showering. Finding more time in the day starts with getting some of that weight off your shoulders.
