Four Solid Tips on Reviewing Resumes
Discovering an ideal candidate can be stressful and challenging. Especially when thumbing through piles of resumes. With so many being thrown your way as an integrator, spotting the right one can be tricky. Luckily, our years of experience in AV hiring have given us some solid insights into what you should be looking for. Integrators, it’s time to find that break in the clouds. Here’s how you identify the ideal candidate resume.
- Act Fast – Today’s hiring climate is fast paced. So much so that job openings seem to out pace quality candidates on a regular basis. It’s vital that you review resumes quickly. Often two or three days is all you have to reach out to qualified candidates and set up an interview. Make those two or three days count before they move on.
- Keep an Open Mind – It’s easier said than done, but keeping an open mind can make a huge difference in how you approach a person’s resume. Unemployment in our industry is almost non-existent. Culture fit should be your number one priority. You should still strongly consider them even if their control system experience is different or if they have more commercial than residential experience. Employment gaps should always be considered red flags, however, you may be surprised by who and what you find. Try to inquire more about the candidate’s story beyond the resume.
- Look for Relatable Experience – Search and hire for attitude and aptitude. Not every candidate will have years of experience within the AV industry. Keep an eye out for those who have done side work in electronics, work in another trade, or have worked at the Genius Bar at Apple. Think back to how you got into the industry.
- Look for Gaps – This is a dead giveaway. While gaps can be a red flag for a not so ideal candidate, you never know the full story until they are in front of you at the interview. The candidate may have left off an unrelated employment history in order to seem relevant. Alternatively, they could have been caring for a family member. They also may be reluctant to let their current employer know that they are seeking other opportunities.
